Meeting with others
— is a series of drawings and sculpture from travels and walks, the result of changing the angle of view and also an effort to greet the others whether they are remarkable or not. It is also an hommage to the project of Finnish artist Annette Arlander “Meeting Remarkable and Unremarkable Trees”.

Plants. animals, mushrooms, strangers of human kind, artifacts of unfamiliar culture, fragments of unknown cities and landscapes are the others. Historically it is common for people to be afraid of the others, to be aggressive towards them. Drawing is the way to get over this prehistoric destructive instinct, and to be attentive to the others and act with respect and curiosity towards them.

My method of working on “Meeting with others” is based on post-humanism literature such as Donna Haraway, Bruno Latour, Michael Marder, Anna Tsing, etc. In spite of its philosophical background the method is rather simple — I study the way my focus changes when I walk in familiar or new places and see someone or something. I make notes and sketches and after returning to my studio create drawings based on these materials and mainly on the impressions from “meeting with others”. This is how I work at the same time with real life characters or things and with the memory of the act of meeting them.

The main medium of “Meeting with others” is graphics, but while I was creating a drawing with horses after meeting them I felt the necessity of walking around the horse. So, I understood it must be three-dimentional. But as a graphic artist I wanted this sculpture to be bold in form and as fragile as the sheet of paper at the same time.  That is how paper-mache horse appeared.
